“Bursting the New York Bubble” with Bitmap and WECREATE

Tuesday, 14 February 2012 20:37

We believe that New York City has the opportunity and responsibility to set a new vision for economic and social change; we want to be part of that.

Our observations show that people in NYC work in a competitive and agitated manner, which are the obstacles facing innovation. We also see that there is a cognitive recognition for the need of collaboration – it’s practically not happening. Neurotic behavioral patterns amongst the entrepreneurial community have shown us that people are not open to sharing. Based on what we have learned about collaboration, the psychology of community, and innovation from our members and partners, we are creating a new philosophy for New York, with a curated community of people who want to create real change.

As it stands, we are not the only ones who believe in this vision. In conjunction with our friends at WECREATENYC, we are here to disrupt the New York attitude. Our new series, Bursting the New York Bubble, will dig deep into the observations above as well as call for change in our approach to creating long-lasting businesses and running successful collaborations. We invite you to join our discussion.

Stay tuned for upcoming articles like “don’t believe the hype” – events and meetups you should avoid, best practices for running a new company without VC funding, how to effectively collaborate with others, what brain technology can teach you about business development, and more.

October 26th, BKTK: Vision vs. Compromise

Monday, 17 October 2011 15:03

Hey everybody,

Looking forward to seeing you all on the 26th for our October Meetup! This month, Rob Barnickel, owner and chief designer of Barnickel Design, will be presenting our discussion topic:

Where:
Bitmap Creative Labs
300 Graham Ave.
Brooklyn, NY 11211
bitmapnyc.com

When: 7-10pm

Client as Director: How to Prevent & Deal with Clients who Take Over

When your client takes control of a project they hired you for and puts on the Art Director hat, how do you deal with that? Do you see it as a collaboration and work with them? Do you hold your creative vision tightly and give a "my way or the highway" ultimatum? What if you your collaborator turns into a Dictator? We'll discuss how to deal with clients who believe their opinions are more valid than your years of professional experience and the pros and cons of working with Art Director clients as well as how to prevent clients from becoming Art Directors.

While this obviously applies to all you designers in the group, we definitely want to hear stories and opinions on this topic other areas of expertise. I know we all face the challenge of when and how to compromise, whether you're a programmer, a copywriter, or...well...any other human being.

Bring your stories and your strategies!

At Bitmap Creative Labs, as always, and it's strictly BYOB. We'll have cups and plates and some snacks, but the drinks are on you. There are numerous bodegas and an organic market nearby, so feel free to grab beer, wine, soft drinks, etc.

See you all on the 26th!

September BKTK: Will you ever own anything you make? IP Law and the New Economy

Wednesday, 21 September 2011 20:24

Hey everyone,

It's the end of the month, so it's time for another BKTK Meetup!

Where:
Bitmap Creative Labs
300 Graham Ave.
Brooklyn, NY 11211
bitmapnyc.com

When: 7-10pm

This month's topic:

What does ownership mean and does it matter anymore? Resident lawyer Philip Kimball will present a brief overview of current IP laws, some of the most compelling arguments for and against changing the laws (and/or enforcement), and how all of this applies to the digital community. He'll include some crucial things to watch out for when signing contracts, starting companies, and creating content. All of this, of course, should definitely provoke some questions, discussion and...dare we say it...friendly arguments? If we're lucky, we might even hit on an answer or two...

We'll be meeting at Bitmap Creative Labs, as always, and it's strictly BYOB. We'll have cups and plates and some snacks, but the drinks are on you. There are numerous bodegas and an organic market nearby, so feel free to grab beer, wine, soft drinks, etc.

Unfortunately, Matt will not be able to make it to this month's Meetup because he's getting married a couple days later. (Wish him luck!) So, Nick Robalik of Bitmap will take over hosting and moderating duties.

Hope you all can make it and looking forward to hearing about the discussion!

It's that time again! Here's the details for our upcoming August BKTK Meetup.

What
: Food, Drinks, and Controversy

Where
: Bitmap Creative Labs

300 Graham Ave.
Brooklyn, NY 11211
bitmapnyc.com

When
: 7pm-10pm

Controversy?

Yup. As always, we have a speaker present a topic for discussion and this month, we think things might get a little heated...

Spec Work: Ripoff or Opportunity?

We'll define and explore speculative work: something any creative or tech professional will run into whether they know it or not. We'll try to provide some info to help you decide, next time it comes up, whether to pass or play.

Beckley Roberts (our presenter) is the one-man web development/design department at Mike's Tech Shop, an Apple Specialist in Chelsea. He has over a decade of experience in print design, web design and web programming.

Come join us and add your voice to the fray! (Although, we'll keep it friendly...so don't be shy...we don't bite...)

See you on the 31st!
